Review by Tom Holtey (Shop proprietor) and Author of “Sit-On-Top Kayaking, A Beginner’s Guide”. I thought I should say a few things about this book as I guess some folks might expect it. It appears to be a very good book. I just now got a few copies, and have not read the book cover to cover. It covers all the basic principals, has wonderful diagrams, and is quite encompassing. Yes, some folks who have read my book and been along since the very beginning days of the acceptance of sit-on-top kayaks, may make a double take at this book. Yes, the title is quite similar, as is much of the back jacket, but Derek has done a fine job and I have to say that this is a better book than mine. My hat is off to you Derek. It just goes to show that SOTs have come a long way, now that a BCU coach has even accepted the sit-on-style as a legitimate kayak. There were days, a decade ago or so, where SOT kayakers were looked down upon. Well no more! Had Athena and I had the time, resources and a publisher (we self published) this is the book we had hoped to produce 10 years ago. Being the first does not make one the best. We hope to write the “Encyclopedia” of sit-on-top kayaking some day.
