Post-Mold Insert Kit (10-32)

Best used to repair missing or corroded nuts molded into the hull of a plastic kayak. This Post-Mold Insert Kit, includes a three 10-32 retrofit nut-serts, a 5mm hex head key and instructions. Use of this kit assumes that you have non-leaking cavity in the deck of a plastic kayak where a deck fitting may be located. The cavity may be a result of improper molding, lack of insert or where an original nut-sert has come out. If the cavity is leaking this kit will not solve the leak.

You may be wondering about nuts and inside access…

If the hardware can be easily accessed from inside the kayak, through an open hatch or cockpit, we can expect a nut inside the hull that will need to held with a wrench. The screw, on the outside, will be turned with a Phillips head screwdriver. Look for nuts inside your kayak with as light and hand mirror. The screw hole will be open through to the entire inside space and would leak if left open.

If there is NO inside access the nuts are molded into the hull plastic. A wrench inside will NOT be needed. If you look inside the kayak you will see a pimple, or nipple like molding around the nut, but you not see the nut, it is covered in plastic. A nut-sert is similar to cup threaded on the inside for a screw. Nut-serts do not leak.

To prepare for screw removal apply some penetrating oil, such as PB Blaster Penetrating Oil in advance, particularly if exposed to salt water. Penetrating oil loosens corroded screws and nuts. Apply and repeat the application several times.
