Those who are looking for Necky and Old Town hatch replacement options please read this page fully and carefully and click on links to more info and options. The Egg Shape Necky and Old Town hatch covers came in two sizes. Old Town Castine and Nantucket, circa year 2000 came with a 8 inch round on the bow and symmetrical oval on the stern. Retrofit Option #1: We have an emergency egg shape hatch option for this type hatch. It is a product designed for temporary use on calm water only. It will never seal as well as the original rubber cover!
Retrofit Option #2: The entire hatch system can be replaced with a round 10 inch (replaces large) and-or 6 inch (replaces small) hatch. This is your best option! The original hatch opening will need to be reduced with a panel of material. Use this link for a Hatch Patch Panel. Get the 10 Inch Performance Hatch Lid and Ring for replacement of the large size. Get the 6 In. Hatch Lid and Ring kit for replacement of the small size. It will be necessary to cut the hatch lip off the deck. Do not make the hole any larger than it already is! You will use your old hatch rim to as a template to cut and drill the panel. Next you will cut a round hole in the panel to match the hatch kit. Use screws and nuts, or rivets, to secure panel to deck with screws and nuts and then the ring to panel. Seal all layers with silicone sealant.
Rim Replacement for Plastic Kayaks (at Pinterest) will address the hatch patch panel as a "donut". This process is applicable to the Classic Old Town and Necky Rubber Hatch retrofit described on this page.

We are hoping that Kajak Sport or Sea-Lect (companies that copy hatch covers) will copy this rubber hatch, if they do so this it would be the best possible retrofit option for the large and small Space Hatch.
Archive Info for Necky and Old Town rubber hatch covers (egg shape): This style was outfitted onto Necky brand kayaks; Cruiser, Cruiser 2 sit-on kayaks as well as the Zoar and Zoar Sport sit-in kayaks. Same rubber covers were also used on some Old Town kayaks outfitted with this same style hatch. This style of hatch was common on these brands from around the year 2000, up until 2004 for Old Town and up until about 2008 for Necky.
These products were sold as replacement covers or as retrofit kits in two sizes; Small and Large. Part Number data for Old Town branded hatches is not available. Part numbers represent the Necky line, Old Town numbers are expected to be different, but otherwise exactly the same, except the embossed logo.

Approximate Small Cover dimensions were 11 1/8 x 8 1/8 inches. Inside dimensions are 9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches, egg shape. The rim foot print dimensions 10 ¾ x 7 3/4 inches.
Approximate Large Cover dimensions were 17 x 12 inches. Inside dimensions are 15 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, egg shape. The rim foot print dimensions 17 x 12 inches.
Most of the Necky and Old Town kayaks outfitted as such have a hatch rim screwed or riveted to the deck. Some may have a rim molded as part of the kayak hull. A small supply of replacement hatch rims, large or small, are still available, while supply lasts.
Old Town Castine and Nantucket, circa year 2000 and before, came with an 8 inch Round hatch on the Bow and a Symmetrical Oval hatch on the Stern. Information on these models is not well documented. At this point we are suggesting the Valley 8 Inch Round Hatch, or the Round Gaspachi for the bow and the Oval Gaspachi for the stern. Please read the article below First!
