All the original parts needed for Perception and Wilderness Systems kayaks outfitted with Comfort Carry Handles, or Side Handles. Kit comes with hardware for both drilled and nut-sert installations. Can be used for new installations too. Parts included: 2 plastic nylon washers 9800249, 2 short screws 9800248, 2 long screws 9800298 and two nuts 9800259 (all 1/4-20 hardware). One pack per handle is needed. Can be used for other applications too.
The mounting Hardware is not complicated. Screw holes are drilled through the hull when inside access is easy. A nut-sert is a nut molded right into the plastic hull when inside access would be difficult.
If the hardware can be accessed easily from inside the kayak, through an open hatch or cockpit, we can expect a nut inside the hull that will need to held with a wrench. Handle screws, on the outside, are best turned with a larger than normal Phillips head screwdriver. Look for nuts inside your kayak with a light and hand mirror.
If there is NO easy inside access the nuts are molded into the hull plastic. A wrench inside will NOT be needed. If you look inside the kayak you will see a pimple, or nipple like molding around the nut, but you not see the nut, it is covered in plastic.
In preparation of handle replacement use some penetrating oil, such as PB Blaster Penetrating Oil, particularly if exposed to salt water. It loosens corroded screws and nuts. Apply some and repeat the application several times.
The parts included in the Handle Hardware Pack are available separately by searching this site by part number. Short screws 9800248 are for nuts that are molded into the plastic hull. Long screws 9800298 are for screws that secured with nuts inside the hull. Nuts 9800259 are only needed for the long screws that secured with nuts inside the hull.
